Error codes

Stove
error codes,
read properly.

A code narrows the search and is also the thing most often read wrong: the same characters mean different things on different brands, and a fair number of the codes people look up are not failures at all — they are modes the appliance was left in.

Three things before
you look it up.

A code is a lead, not a verdict. These decide whether the answer you find will be any use.

01

Every letter and digit on the display

Write the code down in order and note whether it flashes, beeps or sits beside the clock. Snap a photo first, because pressing a key or flipping the breaker can make it disappear.

02

The model number from the stove's plate

Look behind the storage drawer or around the oven door opening. One code can mean an oven sensor on one make and a stuck key on another.

03

Is there a gas smell, smoke or a hot-wire smell?

If there is, you leave the stove alone and get outside now. If not, the next open appointment is soon enough.

What each kind
of code means.

Codes fall into a handful of families. The family says more about the likely repair than the characters do — and one of them is not a repair at all.

How to read a code

Mode, not a failure

56 codes

Something the stove was switched into, often by accident, rather than something that broke: a control lock pressed while wiping the panel, a Sabbath setting, a showroom demo mode that lights the display and heats nothing, a reminder that a spot on the stovetop is still hot. No part is worn out, and the stove's own keys put it right.

Ignition and burners

2 codes

The stove asked a gas burner or the oven to light and never saw a flame, or it kept sparking once the flame was already burning. A burner cap sitting off-center and an igniter still wet from cleaning are ruled out before the spark switch, the spark module or a valve is replaced. A smell of gas outranks every code on the display: get everyone out, and call the gas utility once you are outside.

Stovetop elements

32 codes

A burner on an electric or induction stovetop did not heat the way the knob or key asked, heated with nothing set, or ran hotter than the setting. The pan, a lock left on and the switch behind the knob are checked before the element under the glass, its limiter or an induction board is changed. If a burner keeps heating after it has been switched off, turn the stove's breaker off before anything else.

Oven heating

26 codes

The oven part of the stove was set to bake or broil and did not warm the way the controls expected, or took far too long to get there. On an electric stove a bake or broil element that has burned through is the everyday reason; on a gas stove the oven igniter and the valve it opens are looked at first. The wiring and the relay on the board are checked before the board itself is blamed.

Temperature sensor

34 codes

The thin probe on the back wall of the oven sent the stove a reading it would not trust, or one that kept climbing past the setting. A loose plug behind the stove or a probe knocked against the racks is ruled out before the sensor or the board is replaced. If the oven keeps getting hotter with the controls turned off, switch the stove off at its breaker first.

Door lock

31 codes

The latch that holds the oven door shut during self-clean did not move where the stove told it to, or its switch reported the wrong position. It turns up most often during or right after a self-clean cycle, or once the door has been lifted off for cleaning. The latch, its switches, the hinges and how squarely the door closes are checked before the lock motor is changed.

Knobs, keys and display

29 codes

A key on the panel was held down too long, reported a press nobody made, or stopped answering; or a knob's switch told the stove it was on when it was off. Water, a spill or grease worked in behind a knob is ruled out first, then the switch, the key panel and the cable to the board. If a burner keeps heating while the keys or knobs do nothing, switch the stove off at the breaker.

Control board and power

79 codes

The main board failed its own start-up check, lost contact with the display, or saw the supply voltage sag too low, often after a storm, a power outage or a spill that ran down behind the panel. The breaker, the cord and the outlet are ruled out before a board is replaced. A stove that sparks, smells of hot wiring or keeps heating while this code shows is switched off at the breaker first.

Questions about
the codes.

The code on my stove is not on this site. What now?
It only means we have not written that code up yet; a code gets a page once the maker's own manual explains it. Copy the characters, note whether they flash and where on the display they sit, and type them into the booking form so the technician can match them to your model.
Does a stove code mean the same thing on every brand?
No. A code that points to the oven sensor on one make can mean a stuck key or a door lock on another, and some makers changed their codes between model years. A stove code only makes sense next to the brand and, often, the full model number.
Can I reset a stove code myself?
Some codes clear after the stove's breaker has been off for a few minutes, and one that stays away was probably a blip in the power. A code that comes back every time is pointing at a real problem. If a burner or the oven keeps heating while the code shows, leave the breaker off and book instead of trying again.
My stove shows a code but still cooks. Is anything broken?
Maybe not. Several codes owners look up are settings rather than failures, such as a control lock, a Sabbath or demo mode, or a hot-surface reminder, and none of them needs a part. Each code page says when that is the case and how to switch it back.
