What is particular
to AGA.

The cast-iron side of the US lineup is the eR7, the thermostat-run R7 and the all-electric ERA, which adds a four-zone induction hob beside a cast-iron hotplate. The Elise and Mercury come as dual-fuel stoves or with an induction top, and each family keeps its own owner's guide and its own set of display letters or numbers.

Each plate and oven is its own zone

On an eR7 you turn the boiling plate, the simmering plate and each oven on and off separately, yet the control lets only three elements draw power at the same moment. Ovens that crawl up to heat while both plates are busy are often just waiting their turn.

The number shows up on the handset

The eR7 reports a problem with a warning triangle and a number on its handset, not on the cooker itself. Copy the number down before touching the breaker, because it tells a technician whether to look at a sensor, a relay or an element.

A zone can lock itself for good

If the same blocking error comes back four times within 24 hours, the eR7 disables that plate or oven, and switching the power off and on will not revive it. The reset is on the main board, and AGA leaves it to the technician.

Elise burners need a steady hand

The gas burners on the Elise carry a flame supervision device that shuts off the gas when the flame goes out. A burner that dies the instant you let go usually means the knob was not held in long enough for that device to warm.

Parts

Parts for the cast-iron cookers, such as the eR7's duplex thermocouples and its 2.5 kW plate elements, are specific to AGA, so we read the serial plate before ordering anything. AGA's pages do not give lead times, so we confirm them when the order is placed.

Repair or replace

A cast-iron AGA is built to be kept running for decades by changing one part at a time: a thermocouple, an element or a relay board. On an Elise or Mercury, a burner that will not stay lit or an induction code is likewise a single repair rather than a reason to shop for a new stove.

The handset on my AGA eR7 is showing a number. Is flipping the breaker a good idea?
Write the number down first. A zone that has locked itself after repeated errors stays locked through a power cycle, because the reset sits on the main board and AGA keeps it for service. Book a visit and pass the number on.
Why do the ovens on my AGA heat slowly while both hotplates are in use?
The eR7 gives the boiling and simmering plates full power first and allows only three elements to run at once. AGA's user guide allows roughly an hour for the whole cooker to come up to heat when every zone is started together, so a slow oven during heavy plate use is often normal.
Does an AGA R7 cast-iron cooker show codes?
We found no code list for the R7. Its boiling and simmering plates run on liquid-filled mechanical thermostats, each backed by an overheat thermostat that is reset by hand, so a cold plate is traced through those parts on a visit.
My AGA Elise burner dies the moment I take my hand off the knob. What should I try?
Return the knob to off, give it a full minute, then relight and keep pressing a little longer than before so the flame supervision device can warm. If it still drops out, book a visit. Should you smell gas at any point, walk out of the house before calling the gas utility.
