GE stoves,
specifically.

GE sells gas and electric stoves in freestanding and slide-in widths, and most of them have an electronic oven control that reports trouble with a short code. GE publishes a public list of those codes, so the letters on your display usually tell you which part to look at before anyone arrives.

The GE lineup

What is particular
to GE.

GE-badged stoves come in gas and electric, freestanding and slide-in; the induction and dual-fuel stoves in the family are sold under GE Profile. We read the model number on the frame behind the drawer or door before ordering anything.

A code list you can read yourself

GE keeps a public page of the codes its electronic oven controls show, from F0 to FF plus word messages like Bad Line and Loc Door. If you tell us the code when you book, we know whether to expect a keypanel, a sensor, the door lock or the control board.

Burners can wait out an oven problem

GE tells owners to keep a stove with an oven code off at the breaker, but allows it back on long enough to cook on the burners. For a family that needs dinner tonight, that means the stovetop is often still usable while the oven waits for a repair.

Moving a GE stove has two traps

GE's manual reminds you to re-engage the anti-tip bracket whenever the stove is moved, and warns that the power cord can end up blocking the storage drawer at the back. After a move or a floor project, a drawer that will not close or a stove that rocks forward is usually one of these two.

A warming zone that does not glow

Some GE glass-top stoves have a warming zone in the back center of the glass. GE notes it never glows red like the cooking elements, so a dark warming zone is not proof that it is broken.

Parts

Keypanels, oven sensors, bake elements, igniters and door latches for recent GE stoves are common stock items. Electronic controls for older models can take longer to find, and some are no longer made.

Repair or replace

A sensor, igniter, element or keypanel is almost always worth replacing on a GE stove in good shape. When an older stove needs a control board that is no longer made, we will tell you before any work starts.

Questions about
GE stoves.

My GE stove shows an F code. Can I still cook tonight?
GE suggests keeping the stove off at the breaker until it is repaired, but it allows the breaker back on long enough to use the burners. Switch it off again once you are done.
Why does my GE stove say Bad Line after we moved?
The power connection was redone during the move and GE's message means it is wired wrong. An installer or electrician fixes the connection, and GE says the oven then works normally.
The storage drawer on my GE stove will not close since we moved it. Is something broken?
GE's manual names the power cord as a common reason: it can sit behind the drawer at the lower back. Repositioning the cord usually solves it.
Does a GE stove need to be clipped to the wall?
Yes. GE says the anti-tip bracket must be engaged, and re-engaged every time the stove is moved. It keeps the stove from tipping if someone leans on the open door.
