What F40
actually means.

Frigidaire lists F40 and F41 as a lockout of the stovetop, where the elements on top will not respond. The control does this when it sees a condition it will not heat through.

What to do when F40 shows on the stove

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Frigidaire's own guidance for F40 on its stoves. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Make sure no element knob is partly on, then turn all knobs off.

02

Kill the power at the breaker for as long as 30 seconds, then bring it back.

03

Book a visit if F40 or F41 returns and the top will not heat.

It usually turns into glass stovetop repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

F40 is not the lock feature you set yourself. That lock is canceled by holding OFF; F40 is the control's own lockout.

What you may
notice with it.

The stove problems F40 tends to arrive with. Answer these at the stove before anyone is booked.

Questions
about F40.

Can I clear F40 myself?
Make sure no element knob is partly on, then turn all knobs off. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
How do I tell F40 from the normal lock on my Frigidaire?
The lock you set is canceled by pressing and holding OFF for 6 seconds, as Frigidaire describes. F40 or F41 on the display is the control's lockout and needs a reset.
Can I still use the oven when my Frigidaire shows F41?
The code targets the top, so the oven may work. Test it, and book a visit for the top.
Why would my Frigidaire lock out its elements by itself?
The control may be reading a stuck element switch or an overheated surface. A visit tells you which.

Still showing F40?

Book with the code written exactly as the stove shows it, the full model number, and whether you notice any smell of gas or hot wiring — when there is a code, that is where the diagnosis starts.
