A US home kitchen during a power cut, a stainless freestanding gas stove lit only by daylight from the window, its clock dark and every burner unlit, a box of long kitchen matches and a flashlight resting on the counter beside it.

Gas Stove Won't Light

None of the gas burners will catch: you hear clicking with no flame, or there is no click at all, or the burners lit yesterday and now nothing happens.

What it
usually means.

A gas stove needs three things for a flame: gas at the burner, a spark and a burner that is clean and put together right. When every burner fails at the same time, the cause is almost always something they share. No power to the stove means no spark, which is why a gas stove may not light during an outage until you use a match. No gas can mean the valve behind the stove was left closed after a move, the utility turned off the supply for work in the street, or a propane tank ran empty. A spark module that has stopped firing is the most common part to fail. If you hear clicking and the burners still do not catch, look at the gas; if you hear nothing at all, look at the power.

A technician's hands set a clean round burner head back onto its base on a freestanding gas stove in a US home kitchen, the grate lifted aside. The 6 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Do you hear clicking at the burners when you turn a knob, or nothing at all?

02

Is the power on in the kitchen, and are the clock or lights on the stove working?

03

Do other gas appliances in the home, such as the water heater or furnace, work?

04

Has the stove just been moved, installed or reconnected, or was there utility work nearby?

05

Does the home use natural gas from the street or propane from a tank?

Check these
before you book.

Gas stove won't light: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

If you smell gas at any point, stop, turn the knob off, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.

02

Check that the stove has power: the clock or lights should be on, and the stove's breaker should be switched on.

03

Check another gas appliance; if nothing in the house has gas, call the utility or your propane supplier rather than booking a stove repair.

Also worth checking

  • Remove each burner cap, make sure the igniters and ports are dry and clean, and set the caps back so they sit flat.
  • If you need to cook during a power cut, light a burner with a long match only as your manual describes, and never try to light the oven by hand.

How soon does it need a visit?

A gas stove that will not light is not an emergency as long as there is no gas smell. If gas is flowing without lighting and you smell it, turn off the knob, get out and call the gas utility from outside.

6 things gas stove won't light turns out to be, from no power for the spark to supply valve, regulator or connection problem.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

    No power for the spark

A tripped breaker, an unplugged cord or a power cut stops the spark. Many stoves let you light a burner with a long match while the power is out; follow your manual and never light the oven that way.

  2. 02 no repair

Gas turned off or propane tank empty

After a meter change or street work, the utility may leave the gas off until someone relights the house. An empty propane tank gives the same result. Call the utility or your propane supplier to restore it.

  3. 03 no repair

    Wet or dirty igniters

A deep clean of the stovetop can leave every igniter wet. Give the stove a day to dry before looking further.

  4. 04 low to moderate

    Spark module has stopped firing

When there is power but no click at any burner, the module that creates the spark is the most likely part. It is replaced, not repaired.

  5. 05 low

Cracked igniters or a broken spark wire

Dropped pans and years of heat crack the ceramic igniters, and the spark jumps to the metal instead of the gas. The stove clicks, but the flame never catches.

  6. 06 varies

Supply valve, regulator or connection problem

A valve left partly closed after installation, a regulator set for the wrong gas or a kinked connector can starve every burner. Any work on the supply side needs a gas professional.

Questions about
gas stove won't light.

How do I light my gas stove with a match when the power is out?
Hold a lit long match or lighter at the burner ports, then turn the knob to the light position; the manual for your stove gives the exact steps. Do not try the oven, and turn the burner off if it does not catch within a few seconds.
My new stove will not light. What was missed?
Often the gas valve behind the stove was not opened after connection, or there is still air in the line. If the stove was converted to propane or installed by someone else, have the connection checked.
Can a gas stove run on a propane tank?
Yes, but the burners and regulator must be set up for propane. A stove set for natural gas that is connected to propane, or the other way round, will burn badly and needs converting.
The utility shut off our gas. Can I turn the stove back on myself?
Let the utility restore service and relight the home. After that, if the stove still will not light, book a visit.
