What E5
actually means.
E5 means the oven temperature went past 650 degrees while cooking, far above any bake setting. The control has caught a real overheat.
Kenmore stove display
What to do when E5 shows on the stoveKind of codeOven heating
The oven part of the stove was set to bake or broil and did not warm the way the controls expected, or took far too long to get there. On an electric stove a bake or broil element that has burned through is the everyday reason; on a gas stove the oven igniter and the valve it opens are looked at first. The wiring and the relay on the board are checked before the board itself is blamed.

Recipes take much longer or much less time than they should, cakes burn on the outside and stay raw inside, or an oven thermometer disagrees with the display by more than a little.
