What the stove door and hinge repair
involves.

Stove door hinge repair is about the oven door under the burners. A door that drops open with a bang, will not close the last inch, or sits crooked has usually bent or broken a hinge, often after someone stood on it, sat on it or leaned a heavy tray on it. A door that closes but lets heat out along its edges has a worn or torn seal, and you can see the stain on the front of the stove above it. Self-cleaning stoves also have a door lock that can stick closed or refuse to lock. The technician takes the door off, replaces the hinges in pairs, renews the seal and checks the lock, so the door closes evenly and holds the oven's heat inside.

Hinges are replaced in pairs and a seal clips in, both from the front of the stove. A door lock on a self-cleaning stove, or door glass, adds a little more.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Heritage stoves in Bay Area kitchens have heavy cast-iron or thick enamel doors, and hinge repair there uses the maker's parts and a careful fit so each door closes against the stove as it was designed to.

Questions about
the stove door and hinge repair.

My oven door locked after a self-clean and will not open. How do I get it to release?
Let the stove cool completely, which can take an hour or more. The lock stays shut until the oven is cool. If it still will not release, switch the stove off at the breaker for a minute and back on. If it stays locked, do not pry the door; a visit can release the lock without breaking it.
Why does my oven door fall open with a bang?
The hinge springs are worn or one hinge has broken, so nothing is holding the door's weight. It is a quick repair, and both hinges are usually replaced so the door sits level. Keep children away from the door until then.
Can I stand on the open oven door to reach a high cabinet?
Please do not. The door is not built to hold a person's weight, it can bend the hinges and, if the stove's anti-tip bracket is missing, the whole stove can tip forward. Use a step stool.
There is a brown stain above the oven door. Where does it come from?
Heat and grease are escaping around the door seal, usually because it is torn, flattened or the door is not closing flat. A new seal and a hinge check fix it, and the oven heats more evenly afterward.
