What it
usually means.

A stove error code tells you which check the controls could not pass. On a stove those checks cover the oven heat and its sensor, the door lock used for self-clean, gas ignition on stoves with electronic controls, the burners or zones on a glass or induction top, the keys and display, and the board itself. Some codes are not errors at all: a lock symbol, a showroom mode or a prompt that the oven is still hot. Codes differ from maker to maker, and even between models of the same make, so a code only means something alongside the model number of your stove. Write down exactly what it shows before resetting anything.

Answer these first

01

What exactly does the display show, and could a letter be a number, such as an O for a 0?

02

Does the code come back after the breaker has been off for five minutes?

03

Does it stop only the oven, one burner, or the whole stove?

04

When does it appear: at power-up, during preheat, during self-clean or while a burner is on?

05

Can you find the model number, usually on a plate behind the oven drawer or around the door frame?

Check these
before you book.

Stove error code: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Write the code down exactly as shown, or take a photo of the display.

02

If the code comes with heat that will not switch off, smoke or a burning smell, turn off the breaker if you can reach it away from the stove; with any gas smell, leave and call the gas utility from outside.

03

Find your stove's model number, usually on a plate behind the oven drawer or inside the door frame.

Also worth checking

  • Switch the breaker off for five minutes, switch it back on and see whether the code returns.
  • Look up the code in the manual for your exact model, because some codes are prompts rather than failures.

How soon does it need a visit?

Most stove codes can wait for a visit. Treat the code as urgent if it warns of overheating, the oven or a burner keeps heating, or smoke or a burning smell comes with it; switch off the breaker if you can safely. Any gas smell means leaving the house and calling the gas utility from outside.

8 things stove error code turns out to be, from lock, showroom or hot-oven prompt to control board or power code.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

    Lock, showroom or hot-oven prompt

A lock symbol, a demo mode or a message that the oven is hot can look like an error. The manual lists these and how to clear them.

  2. 02 low

    Oven temperature sensor code

The control has a reading from the oven sensor it cannot trust and stops the oven until the sensor or its wiring is checked.

  3. 03 low to moderate

    Oven heating code

The oven did not warm up as fast as expected, or ran too hot, pointing to an element, igniter or relay.

  4. 04 low to moderate

    Door lock code

The lock used for self-clean did not move to where the control expected, often locking or unlocking at the wrong moment.

  5. 05 low to moderate

    Gas ignition code

Stoves with electronic gas controls can report a burner or oven that did not light. If you smell gas at all, get out and phone the gas utility once you are outdoors.

  6. 06 low to moderate

    Stovetop element or zone code

Glass and induction stovetops report a zone that overheated, a sensor under the glass that failed or a problem finding the pan.

  7. 07 moderate

    Key or display code

A key held down by a spill or a pan, or a display that has stopped talking to the board, raises a code of its own.

  8. 08 moderate to highest

    Control board or power code

The board reports its own failures and problems with the power reaching it, which can follow a storm or a surge.

Questions about
stove error code.

The code went away after I reset the breaker. Should I still book a visit?
Maybe not. A brief power problem can leave a code that a reset clears. If the same code comes back, the part it points to is likely failing.
Why do the codes I found online not match my stove?
Lists online often mix makes, models and types of appliance. Only the manual for your model number can be trusted.
Does an old stove with knobs have error codes?
Most older stoves with dials have no display and no codes. Newer stoves with a clock and touch keys usually do, mainly for the oven.
Can I clear a code and keep cooking?
If the code clears and the stove works normally, yes. If it comes back while cooking, stop, because the stove is telling you a part is not working as it should.
