What the stove knob and switch replacement
involves.

Stove knob replacement sounds like the smallest repair there is, and sometimes it is: a cracked knob or a worn clip inside it that no longer grips the stem. But a knob that spins freely, points at the wrong setting or feels loose can also mean the stem behind it has broken, and on an electric stove the switch behind the knob is what decides how much heat the burner gets. When that switch fails, a burner stays on high whatever the knob says, or stays cold. The technician checks the knob, the stem and the switch, and replaces the right one, so the knob points where the heat really is. On gas stoves the spark switch on the same stem is checked at the same time.

How the visit goes

Knob and switch replacement,

01

Turn each knob through its settings and compare where it points with what the burner or oven does.

02

Pull the knob and check its clip and the shape of the stem it sits on.

03

With the power off, test the switch or valve behind the knob and look for burned terminals.

04

Low,

A knob on its own is minor. A switch behind a knob takes a short job with the power off, and scorched wire ends on it are renewed during the same visit.

Tampa Bay grandparents with visiting toddlers often call about stove knobs that turn too easily, and worn knobs are replaced, with knob covers or the stove's own lock feature shown so small hands cannot turn a burner on.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando rental stoves lose knobs to guests who pull them off to clean or knock them loose, and replacements are ordered to match the model so every knob points to the setting the burner really delivers.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

In South Florida humidity and cleaning sprays reach the switches behind a stove's knobs, and a burner that heats only on high is fixed by a new switch, while a burner stuck on means turning the breaker off first when that can be done safely.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

New York apartment stoves have served generation after generation of tenants, and cracked knobs, worn-off marks and gas valves that turn stiffly are replaced so each setting matches what its knob shows.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston households cook every day on the front burners, and the switches behind those knobs wear first, so a burner that jumps between low and high is fixed by replacing that one switch rather than the set.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland families moving into older homes often find a stove with mismatched or broken knobs left by past owners, and a full matching set ordered for the model makes every burner's setting clear again.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles owners of vintage stoves prize their original chrome and Bakelite knobs, and when one cracks the technician looks for a matching replacement before suggesting a modern knob.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Near the San Diego coast, stove knobs stiffen as salt reaches the valve stems behind them, and replacing the knob and freeing or replacing the valve lets a burner turn down smoothly again.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area parents often ask about knob locks for a gas stove, and during a knob or switch replacement the technician shows what the stove's own design allows and which covers fit its knobs.

Questions about
the stove knob and switch replacement.

A burner will not turn off with its knob. What do I do right now?
On an electric stove, switch it off at the breaker if you can reach the panel safely, and keep pans and towels off the hot burner. On a gas stove, if the flame will not go out, close the gas valve behind the stove only if you can reach it without leaning over the flame; otherwise leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.
My toddler keeps turning the stove knobs. What helps?
Knob covers that snap over each knob are the simplest fix, and many stoves let you pull the knobs off when not cooking. Some models also have a control lock. Keep the anti-tip bracket in place too, since children sometimes climb on an open oven door.
Can I buy knobs from a different stove if they fit the stem?
A knob from another model may fit but point to the wrong marks, which means the setting you see is not the setting you get. Use knobs made for your model so off really means off.
The knob markings have worn off. Is that worth fixing?
Yes, especially on a gas stove, where the off position needs to be obvious to anyone who uses it. A matching set of knobs is a small cost, and it is a good time to check that each one sits firmly.
