Stovetop Not Heating

The burners on an electric, glass or induction stovetop stay cold or warm up only a little, sometimes all of them and sometimes two on one side, while the oven below may still work.

What it
usually means.

When more than one burner on an electric stovetop stops heating at once, look first at what those burners share. An electric stove uses both halves of its double breaker, and with one half tripped you may get lights and a clock but weak or no heat. Burners on the same side often share wiring, and a burnt connection at the back can take out two at once. A smooth glass top has an element under each circle and a heat limiter that switches it off if the glass gets too hot, which a warped pan or a pan larger than the circle can trigger. On an induction stove the burner does nothing unless the pan is magnetic and big enough, and the power boards under the glass can fail and take a whole side with them.

Answer these first

01

Is it all the burners, the ones on one side, or just one?

02

Does the oven still heat normally?

03

Is it a coil top, a smooth glass top or an induction top?

04

On glass, does the element glow at first and then cut out after a few minutes?

05

On induction, does a magnet stick to the bottom of your pan, and does the display show a pan symbol?

Stovetop not heating: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Switch the stove's breaker fully off and on again, then see whether the burners heat.

02

If you see sparks or smell burning when a burner is on, turn it off and switch off the breaker if you can reach the panel away from the stove.

03

Try a flat, heavy pan that matches the size of the burner; on induction, check that a magnet sticks firmly to its base.

Also worth checking

  • Check whether the oven heats; if it does and the stovetop does not, the problem is in the stovetop's own parts.
  • Tell us which burners are affected and what kind of stovetop you have.

How soon does it need a visit?

A cold stovetop is not an emergency. Stop using it only if you see sparks, smell burning, or a burner heats when it is supposed to be off.

The causes,
cheapest first.

6 things stovetop not heating turns out to be, from half of the breaker tripped to induction power board failed.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

    Half of the breaker tripped

The stove can keep its clock and lights on one half of a double breaker while the burners need both. Switch the breaker fully off and back on.

  2. 02 no repair

Pan the stovetop cannot use well

A warped pan on glass trips the limiter and slows heating, and a pan without a magnetic base does nothing on induction. Try a flat, heavy pan the size of the circle.

  3. 03 low to moderate

    Burner switch failing

The switch behind the knob can wear so that the burner barely warms on every setting.

  4. 04 low to moderate

    Burnt connection at the back

A loose wire where power enters the stove, or at the connection that feeds one side of the stovetop, can knock out several burners at once.

  5. 05 moderate

Element or limiter under the glass

The element under a glass top can burn out, and its limiter can fail so it cuts power too soon. Either one leaves that circle cold or lukewarm.

  6. 06 moderate to highest

    Induction power board failed

The boards that drive the induction coils can fail after a surge or overheating, often taking two zones on the same side with them.

Questions about
stovetop not heating.

Why do two burners on the same side stop together?
They often share a wire, a connection or, on induction, a power board. When a pair on one side fails at once, a shared part is more likely than two failures.
My glass stovetop heats, then turns off by itself. Is that broken?
The limiter switches an element off when the glass is too hot, often because of a warped or empty pan. If it happens with a flat pan full of food, the limiter or element may be failing.
Can I use my old pans on a new induction stove?
Only if a magnet sticks firmly to the bottom. Aluminum, copper and glass pans will not heat unless they have a magnetic base.
Is a stovetop that heats slowly worth repairing?
Often yes, especially if only one burner or one side is affected. The oven and the rest of the stove usually have plenty of life left.
