What C81
actually means.

Whirlpool uses C81, C82 and C83 to tell you that a surface cooking area overheated and the automatic shutoff kicked in. A pan left on high, a pot that boiled dry or a pan much smaller than the element can all push the glass past its limit.

What to do when C81 shows on the stove

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Whirlpool's own guidance for C81 on its stoves. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Turn off the oven if it is running and take the pan off the hot area.

02

Wait five minutes for the stovetop to cool, then turn the element back on.

03

If the code returns during normal cooking, cut power for one minute at the breaker; if it comes back again, book a visit.

It usually turns into glass stovetop repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

C81 is not a sign that the element has burned out. It means the shutoff worked, and the element usually heats again once the glass has cooled.

What you may
notice with it.

The stove problems C81 tends to arrive with. Answer these at the stove before anyone is booked.

Questions
about C81.

Can I clear C81 myself?
Turn off the oven if it is running and take the pan off the hot area. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Why did my Whirlpool stovetop shut off and show C81 while I was canning?
Long boils at high heat with a big pot can overheat the glass under it. Let it cool for five minutes and lower the setting a notch once the water is boiling.
Is C82 on my Whirlpool different from C81?
Whirlpool puts C81, C82 and C83 together with one meaning: a surface area overheated and shut off.
Can a warped pan cause C81 on a Whirlpool glass stovetop?
A pan that does not sit flat heats unevenly and can run the glass hotter. Try a flat-bottomed pan the size of the element.

Still showing C81?

Book with the code written exactly as the stove shows it, the full model number, and whether you notice any smell of gas or hot wiring — when there is a code, that is where the diagnosis starts.
