Smeg stoves,
specifically.

Smeg's US stoves are the Portofino, in 30 and 36 inches and in bold colors such as red, and the Professional line from 24 to 48 inches, sold as all-gas, dual-fuel and induction models. Few of its stove manuals list codes, so most visits begin from what the burners or the oven are doing.

The Smeg lineup

What is particular
to Smeg.

Portofino stoves come in 30 and 36 inches, as full-gas or dual-fuel models. The Professional line spans 24 to 48 inches in full-gas and dual-fuel form and offers induction up to 36 inches. Every Smeg model number has a user manual of its own, and that is how we match guides and parts.

Fifteen seconds to light, five minutes to wait

Smeg's rule for a burner is firm: if it has not caught within 15 seconds, turn the knob off and wait five minutes before trying again. The same wait applies when a flame goes out by itself.

The crown has to line up

Each flame-spreader crown must sit with its holes lined up over the thermocouple and the igniter. A crown put back slightly turned after cleaning can leave a burner that sparks but never catches.

ERR on the Portofino touch display

The Portofino dual-fuel stove with the touch display can show ERR with a number. Smeg does not explain the numbers, and asks you to note the message, the cooking function and the temperature before arranging service.

A lock message you caused yourself

On a Smeg Professional induction stove with Control lock switched on, keeping hold of the knobs for more than 30 seconds makes an error message appear. It disappears once you let go; nothing inside has failed.

Parts

Smeg lists a separate user manual and installation manual for each stove, and parts follow the model and serial label. Smeg does not state lead times, so we confirm them when the order goes in.

Repair or replace

Most Smeg stove problems come down to a burner, a thermocouple, an igniter or the oven thermostat, each changed on its own. Replacement is worth weighing only when the oven cavity or several major controls have failed at once.

Questions about
Smeg stoves.

My Smeg burner sparks but never lights. What should I check?
Make sure the flame-spreader crown is seated with its holes over the thermocouple and igniter, which Smeg requires. If the burner still has not lit within 15 seconds, turn it off, wait five minutes and try once more; book a visit if it keeps failing.
My Smeg burner won't stay on after I release the knob. Why?
The thermocouple needs a few more seconds of flame before it will hold the gas open, so keep the knob pressed a little longer after lighting. If the burner still drops out, let five minutes pass before another attempt, and book a visit if the result is the same.
My Smeg Portofino shows ERR. What do I do?
Write down the whole message, the cooking function and the temperature you set, which are the details Smeg asks for. Then book a visit so the oven control can be tested.
Everything I bake in my Smeg oven burns quickly. What does Smeg suggest?
Smeg's troubleshooting table links food that burns in a short time to a defective thermostat. That is a service repair, so book a visit instead of setting the dial lower to make up for it.
