What the glass stovetop repair
involves.

Glass stovetop repair covers the flat black surface on a smooth-top electric or induction stove and everything under it. A circle that stays dark while the others glow is usually a failed element or its heat limiter, and on an induction stove a coil or its sensor; those are replaced by lifting the glass and working underneath. A top that is cracked, chipped at an edge or scarred by melted plastic is replaced as a whole panel, because the glass keeps spills away from the wiring. The new top is made for your model, the elements are moved across or renewed and the edges are sealed. A crack is the one glass stovetop problem to stop cooking on right away.

How the visit goes

Glass stovetop repair,
step by step.

Hand back a smooth top where every circle heats evenly and the hot-surface light goes out once it has cooled.

01

Run every circle on the glass with a pan, and check the hot-surface light and any display.

02

Switch off the breaker, lift the glass from its frame and test the elements, limiters or coils beneath it.

03

Replace the element, limiter or coil that failed, or fit a new glass top made for the model.

04

Reseal the glass in its frame and check that no wire or sensor touches the underside.

05

Hand back a smooth top where every circle heats evenly and the hot-surface light goes out once it has cooled.

Stovetop Not Heating

6 causes, cheapest first

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether one circle stays cold, the glass is cracked, or the hot-surface light stays on
  2. Whether the stove is a radiant glass top or induction
  3. Where a crack or chip is and how large it is
  4. The model number, since glass tops are made for a single model

Moderate to highest,
on the site's scale.

An element or limiter under the glass stays toward the middle of the scale. A whole new glass top, made for one model, is one of the costliest jobs a stove can need, and more so on an induction stove.

Questions about
the glass stovetop repair.

A pot fell and chipped the edge of my glass stovetop. Is it still safe?
A chip near the edge may look minor, but it can grow into a crack when the glass heats and cools. If you can feel a crack line or see it run toward a cooking circle, stop using the stove and switch it off at the breaker. A small chip in the frame, off the glass, is cosmetic.
Why does one circle on my glass top glow on high but not on low?
On low the stove turns the element on and off in short cycles, so it can look dark for part of the time; that is normal. If it never warms on low but works on high, the switch or the element's inner ring may have failed.
Melted plastic stuck to the glass. Can it be removed?
Usually it comes off. With the stove off and the glass cool, a flat razor scraper held low can lift it. Sugar and plastic are best removed soon, as they can pit the surface. If a pit or a crack is left, the glass may need replacing.
The hot-surface light stays on hours after cooking. Why?
The light is switched by a sensor or a small switch on the element, and when it sticks the light stays on even on cold glass. Check with your hand held above the glass; if the glass is cool, the light's switch or its board has failed, which is a small repair.
