What it
usually means.

The door of a stove oven hangs on two hinges with strong springs that pull it closed and hold it against the seal. A child standing or sitting on the open door, a heavy pan dropped on it or someone leaning on it can bend a hinge, and a broken spring leaves the door floppy on one side. A rack pulled out of its track or a dish sticking out can stop it closing, and on self-cleaning ovens a door lock that stays on after the cycle holds the door in place. The door also needs the stove to stand level: a stove moved without its anti-tip bracket, or on an uneven floor, can pull the door out of line. A door that does not close lets heat escape and warms the knobs above it.

Answer these first

01

Does the door close part way and spring back, or hang open evenly?

02

Is the gap on one side only, and does the door sit crooked?

03

Has anyone leaned on, stood on or sat on the open door?

04

Is a rack, pan or the door lock getting in the way?

05

Was the stove moved recently, and is it standing level with its anti-tip bracket in place?

Stove door won't close: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Take everything out of the oven, push the racks back fully into their tracks and try closing the door.

02

If the oven has just finished a self-clean cycle, wait until it has cooled before trying to open or close the door.

03

Never let children stand or sit on the open door; if the stove wobbles when the door is pressed, make sure its anti-tip bracket is fitted.

Also worth checking

  • Look at the door seal and hinges for torn spots, bent arms or a door that sits lower on one side.
  • Tell us whether the door closes crooked, springs open or hangs loose, and whether anyone put weight on it.

How soon does it need a visit?

A door that does not close is not urgent, but do not cook with it open, because heat will build up around the knobs and the counters nearby. Keep children off the open door and make sure the stove cannot tip.

The causes,

6 things stove door won't close turns out to be, from rack or dish in the way to door lock motor or latch failed.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

Rack or dish in the way

A rack not fully in its track or a large pan sticking out stops the door closing. Slide everything back and try again.

  2. 02 no repair

    Door lock left engaged

After a self-clean cycle the lock stays on until the oven cools. Wait until it has cooled and the lock releases by itself.

  3. 03 no repair

Stove not level or tipped forward

A stove standing on an uneven floor, or one missing its anti-tip bracket, pulls the door out of line. Level it with the feet, and make sure the bracket is fitted.

  4. 04 low

    Bent or broken hinge

Weight on an open door bends a hinge or snaps its spring. The door then closes crooked or drops open.

  5. 05 low

Door seal torn or out of place

A seal that has come loose from its clips can bunch up and hold the door open a crack.

  6. 06 low to moderate

Door lock motor or latch failed

On self-cleaning ovens, a lock that fails half engaged can stop the door from closing properly or trap it shut.

Questions about
stove door won't close.

What is an anti-tip bracket and does my stove need one?
It is a metal bracket fixed to the floor or wall that catches a foot of the stove so it cannot tip forward when weight goes on the open door. Freestanding and slide-in stoves come with one; if yours was moved and the bracket was left behind, have it refitted.
My door closes but sits crooked. Can I bend the hinge back?
It is not a good idea. Hinges are under strong spring tension and can snap closed on fingers. Replacing them is quick.
Why will the door not open after self-clean?
The lock stays on until the oven is cool enough. If the oven is cold and the lock still does not release, the lock may have failed.
The door closes, but I can feel heat at the edge. Is that a problem?
A little warmth at the edge is normal. A strong draft of heat means the seal or hinges need attention, and the oven will run cooler and waste energy.
