What the stove coil burner and socket repair
involves.

Stove coil burner repair is for the classic electric stove, where each coil plugs into a socket under a drip pan. A coil that stays cold is sometimes simply worn out, but just as often the coil is fine and the socket has burned: its clips lose their grip, the metal darkens and the coil gets power only when it is pushed a certain way. Keep using a coil in a burned socket and the heat spreads to the wiring behind it. The technician tests the coil, checks the socket and its wires, and replaces the socket with new wire ends when it is damaged, so the new coil is not ruined by the old contact. Drip pans are replaced at the same time when they are rusted or scorched.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Across Tampa Bay plenty of rentals and older homes still cook on coil burners, and a coil that warms only when it is wiggled usually points to a burned socket, a quick repair once the stove is unplugged and the drip pan lifted out.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando's long-term rentals still furnish coil stoves, and tenants who line the drip pans with foil trap heat under the coil until its socket scorches, so a socket repair there often comes with a word about the foil.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

Older South Florida houses and villas away from the towers often keep a coil stove, and in the damp coastal air its sockets and terminals corrode, so a burner that crackles or heats in patches is repaired at the socket.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Coil stoves are uncommon in New York's gas kitchens but turn up in basement units and add-on apartments, and when a coil stops heating there the socket and its switch are tested in whatever space those small kitchens allow.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston apartment complexes still install coil stoves, and a coil bent by a heavy pot or yanked out during cleaning loosens its socket, so replacing the socket and the coil together is the usual repair there.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

In Chicagoland rental flats with an electric coil stove, a burner that heats only on high often has a worn switch rather than a bad coil, and each burner is tested on its own so the landlord pays only for what failed.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles apartments with coil stoves see the most socket burns on the front burners used every day, and a socket blackened at its prongs is replaced before a new coil goes in, since a fresh coil in a burned socket fails fast.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego's beach cottages and older rentals keep plain coil stoves, and salt air on the socket terminals makes coils flicker or go cold, a repair made by fitting a new socket with the stove unplugged first.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Coil stoves survive in Bay Area in-law units and older apartments, and a socket repair there keeps a plain, dependable stove working for tenants instead of swapping it for one the unit's wiring may not support.

Questions about
the stove coil burner and socket repair.

My coil burner sparked and popped. Can I keep using the stove?
Stop using that coil. A pop and a spark usually mean the coil split or the socket arced, and heat there can damage the wiring. Let it cool and leave the knob off. If sparks or smoke keep coming, switch the stove off at the breaker if you can do it safely.
Will a new coil from the hardware store fix my burner?
If the coil itself failed, yes, as long as it is the right size and plug type for your stove. If the socket is burned, a new coil will soon fail too, so look at the socket's clips first: darkened, loose or melted clips mean the socket needs replacing.
Should I line the drip pans with foil?
Skip the foil. It can trap heat under the coil and, on some stoves, touch the socket or the terminals. Clean pans or new ones are safer and inexpensive.
My coil wobbles and does not sit flat. Will that affect cooking?
Yes. A coil that tilts heats pans unevenly and pulls on the socket, which loosens the contact. Push it all the way in and check that its support sits in the pan's slot; if it still rocks, the socket or the support is bent.
