What it
usually means.

The oven part of a stove has its own heating parts, separate from the burners. An electric oven heats with a bake element on the floor and a broil element at the top, switched by the control. A gas oven uses a burner under the floor, lit by an igniter that must glow hot enough to open the gas valve; a weak igniter still glows but never opens the valve, so the oven stays cold. A temperature sensor on the back wall tells the control when to heat. When the burners work but the oven does not, one of these oven parts is usually to blame, though a timer, a delayed start or a lock left on can make a healthy oven look broken.

Answer these first

01

Do the burners on top work normally?

02

On an electric oven, does the bake element on the floor glow red, and does the broil element at the top?

03

On a gas oven, can you see the igniter glow through the floor slot, and does the flame ever light?

04

Is there a clock, delay or timer setting on the display, or a lock symbol?

05

Does the oven get warm but stop far short of the temperature you set?

before you book.

Oven on my stove won't heat up: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Clear any delay, timer or lock on the display and try the oven again.

02

If you smell gas while the oven tries to heat and it has not lit, turn it off, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.

03

On an electric oven, set it to bake and watch the bottom element through the window; it should glow red after a few minutes.

Also worth checking

  • On a gas oven, look through the slot in the floor to see whether the igniter glows and a flame follows within a minute or two.
  • Tell us whether the burners on top work and what you saw inside the oven.

How soon does it need a visit?

An oven that will not heat is not an emergency. It becomes one if you smell gas without a flame, see sparks from the element or notice smoke from the back of the stove.

6 things oven on my stove won't heat up turns out to be, from delay, timer or lock left on to control board relay.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

Delay, timer or lock left on

A delayed start, a timer set to cook later or a lock after cleaning can keep the oven from heating. Clear them on the display and try again.

  2. 02 low

    Burnt-out bake element

An electric oven's bottom element can break with a flash or a visible gap and stop heating. The broil element may still work, so the top of the oven is warm and the bottom stays cold.

  3. 03 low

    Temperature sensor reading wrong

A sensor that reads wrong can make the control shut off the heat early or never switch it on. It often comes with an error on the display.

  4. 04 low to moderate

    Weak gas oven igniter

A gas oven's igniter weakens over time. It still glows orange, but not hot enough to open the gas valve, so the oven takes forever to light or does not light at all.

  5. 05 moderate

Oven gas valve or safety valve

If the igniter is good and the oven still does not light, the valve that lets gas into the oven burner may have failed.

  6. 06 moderate to highest

    Control board relay

The board switches power to the oven elements or the igniter. A failed relay leaves the oven cold even when every part it powers is fine.

Questions about
oven on my stove won't heat up.

The burners work but the oven is cold. Is the whole stove failing?
Not usually. The oven has its own element or igniter, and those are the parts that wear out most. The stovetop being fine points to an oven part.
My gas oven takes a very long time to light. Why?
A weak igniter glows for a long time before it gets hot enough to open the gas valve. It is the most common gas oven repair and should be done before the igniter stops working entirely.
Can I still bake using just the broil element?
It can brown the top of food, but it does not bake evenly and it is not meant to be used that way. Wait for the bake element to be replaced.
Does a power outage affect a gas oven?
Yes. Most gas ovens need electricity for their igniter and controls, so the oven will not work until power is back.
