What the stove diagnostic visit
involves.

A stove diagnostic visit starts with the stove doing the thing that bothers you. The technician lights or switches on each burner, turns the oven on to bake and to broil, watches the display and listens for the ticking, the click of a switch or the hum of a fan. Then the checks move to what feeds the stove: the gas valve and connector or the cord and outlet behind it, and the breaker in the panel. Only then are panels opened and parts measured, so the answer is a tested part and not a guess from the symptom. You end the visit knowing what failed, what the repair involves and what it costs, or hearing plainly that your stove is not worth the money.

How the visit goes

Diagnostic visit,
step by step.

Leave you with the failed part named, the work explained and a price, or an honest word that a new stove is the better buy.

01

Cook on the stove the way you use it, trying each burner from low to high and the oven on bake and broil.

02

Check the gas shutoff and connector, or the cord, outlet and breaker, before any panel comes off.

03

Open the stovetop, the back panel or the oven floor as needed and test the suspect parts with a meter.

04

On a gas stove, check every fitting that was touched for leaks; on an electric one, look for heat marks on the wiring.

05

Leave you with the failed part named, the work explained and a price, or an honest word that a new stove is the better buy.

Stove Won't Turn On

6 causes, cheapest first

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether the stove is gas, electric coil, smooth glass, induction or a classic heritage model
  2. Which burner or which part of the oven acts up, and how often
  3. Any code, blinking light or sound the stove makes
  4. The model number from the plate in the storage drawer frame or on the oven door edge

The scale on this page is a map of where stove jobs usually land, not a quote for yours. A burner that stays cold might need a coil, a socket, a switch or a single wire; an oven that will not warm might need an element, an igniter, a valve or a sensor. Over the phone those look the same. So the stove is run and measured first, the price is set once the failed part is known, and nothing is fitted until you have said yes.

The kitchen, the climate and the building all change how the stove diagnostic visit goes. These notes are about that, metro by metro.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Many Tampa Bay stoves belong to rentals and winter homes, so the diagnostic often begins with what a tenant or a returning owner noticed, then tries every burner and the oven, so the owner learns the condition of the whole stove and not just the one complaint.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

In an Orlando vacation home a guest usually reports the problem while the owner is miles away, so the diagnostic writes down what each burner and the oven actually do and sends those findings to the owner before any part is ordered.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

After a hurricane or a long outage in South Florida, the diagnostic tells a stove that only lost its settings from one that stood in floodwater, and the second is not switched on again until its wiring, controls and gas valve have been examined.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

In a New York rental the landlord or managing agent usually owns the stove, so the diagnostic is often arranged through the super, and it covers every burner, the oven and the gas connection so the owner gets one clear report.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston families who got through a long outage by lighting a gas stovetop by hand often call once the lights are back and the oven still will not start, and the diagnostic looks first at the oven igniter and at the board the returning power may have jolted.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland two-flats and bungalows often keep a gas stove older than the current owner's time in the house, and a diagnostic there answers the buyer's real question: does each burner and the oven work safely, and is this stove worth keeping.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

After an earthquake in Los Angeles, a stove that shifted on its connector or bracket is checked before anyone cooks on it again, and the diagnostic covers the gas line behind it, each burner and the oven; if gas can be smelled, everyone goes outdoors and phones the gas company first.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego households move often with military orders, and a diagnostic on the stove in a freshly rented or bought house checks the connection, the tip bracket and every burner, since stoves there are often pulled out and reset between tenants.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area owners of vintage enamel gas stoves, which many older flats still cook on, book a diagnostic to learn whether a burner or thermostat can be rebuilt, and the technician says plainly which parts for that stove are still made.

Questions about
the stove diagnostic visit.

What should I get ready before the technician comes to look at my stove?
Clear the stovetop and take the pans out of the storage drawer, since the drawer often comes out to reach the back of the stove. Leave some room in front of it so it can slide forward. If the problem comes and goes, a short phone video of it happening is a big help.
Does the stove have to be pulled away from the wall?
Only when the answer is behind it: the gas line, the cord, the outlet or the back panel. The floor in front is protected first, and the stove goes back with the anti-tip bracket in place.
My stove works again today. Should I still book the visit?
If it failed once for no clear reason, it will usually fail again, often at a worse moment. Write down what happened and when, and book the visit anyway; a part that is starting to fail can often be found by testing even on a good day.
Is the visit fee part of the repair price?
Ask when you book so it is clear from the start. The repair is priced after the cause is known, and nothing is replaced until you say yes.
