What Tribeca does

The Tribeca West Historic District, designated on May 7, 1991, took in 17 blocks and about 220 buildings, mostly warehouses, factories and office buildings from 1860 to 1910.

Rather than one district for all of Tribeca, the Landmarks Preservation Commission created four smaller historic districts in 1991 and 1992.

The area was among the first residential neighborhoods built beyond New York's colonial boundaries and stayed mainly residential until the 1840s.

One of its oldest buildings, 401 Greenwich Street, went up sometime between 1805 and 1825 and has served both as a townhouse and as a cafe.
