What SoHo does

Cast iron was expected to resist fire, but in a blaze it buckled and then cracked under the cold water used to put the fire out.

In the 1880s and 1890s textile firms and other large manufacturers moved in, and SoHo became the city's center for the wholesale dry-goods trade.

Enlarged windows in the cast-iron fronts flooded the once gas-lit interiors of its industrial buildings with daylight.
