Viking stoves,
specifically.

Viking sells gas, dual-fuel, electric and induction stoves across its 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series and Tuscany collections, including open-burner gas models built for high heat. Most of the calls we get are about burners, ignition and ovens that will not hold temperature, since Viking stoves do not print numbered error codes for owners.

Error codesViking's stove manuals print no numbered error codes. On a 7 Series stove an error turns the knob backlight red and flashes the ring behind the griddle or oven knob, so note which knob flashes and how, and book a visit.

What is particular
to Viking.

Viking's stoves span the 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series and Tuscany collections, with gas, dual-fuel, electric and induction versions. Ignition parts, knob lighting and oven controls differ by collection, so we read the model number first.

Open or sealed burners

Viking offers some gas stoves with open burners and others with sealed burners. Open burners let spills run down below the stovetop, so cleaning and igniter problems look different from those on a sealed top.

Burners that relight themselves

Viking's SureSpark system relights a burner that goes out while the gas is still on, so a few clicks on a low simmer in a draft are expected. Clicking that never stops once the flame is lit is a different matter and worth a look.

Red knob lights on the 7 Series

The 7 Series has lit rings behind its knobs. When something is wrong the backlight turns red and the ring behind the affected knob flashes, which is the stove's way of reporting an error.

Nothing to cook on in a blackout

Viking's 7 Series manual says the electric igniters do not work in a power failure and the stove should not be used until power returns. We tell owners to plan on another way to cook during an outage.

Parts

Igniters, spark modules and burner parts are common on Viking stoves, while control and lighting parts are matched to the collection. Some parts are ordered after the first visit.

Repair or replace

Viking stoves are heavy, steel-built appliances, and igniters, valves and oven sensors are routine repairs. Replacement makes sense mainly when an older oven control or burner box is no longer supported.

Questions about
Viking stoves.

Why is the light behind my Viking stove knob flashing red?
On a 7 Series stove, a red backlight with a flashing ring is how the stove reports an error. The manual does not list what each pattern means, so note which knob flashes and book a visit.
Can I cook on my Viking stove when the power is out?
Viking's 7 Series manual says the electric igniters will not work in a power failure and the stove should not be used until power is back. Plan on another way to cook during an outage.
My Viking burner clicks once or twice on low. Is that normal?
It can be. Viking's re-ignition sparks again if the flame goes out while gas is flowing, and a draft can do that on a low flame. Constant clicking with a steady flame is not normal and should be checked.
Does my Viking stove have error codes?
Not numbered ones that the owner reads. Viking stoves show problems through how they behave, and on the 7 Series through the red knob lights.
