DCS stoves,
specifically.

In the US today, DCS offers outdoor products only, and it has been part of Fisher & Paykel since 2004. Its earlier indoor dual-fuel stoves, built with heavy cast-iron grates and burners that keep a small flame lit, still cook in many homes and still need burner and ignition work.

Where it sitsDCS no longer sells an indoor stove in the US; its site lists outdoor products only.

The DCS US site covers grilling, cooling, heating and storage, and its old indoor cooking address returns an error. DCS indoor stoves such as the RDS dual-fuel models were sold earlier, so the ones we see are discontinued. Reading the model plate before a visit lets us check which parts are still out there.

Error codesThe DCS indoor stove manual we read shows no display codes. Watch how the stove behaves instead: whether the igniter clicks, whether the small simmer flame stays lit, and whether the oven comes up to heat.

What is particular
to DCS.

The DCS indoor stoves we see are mostly RDS dual-fuel models in 30-, 36- and 48-inch widths, all discontinued in the US. The exact model on the label decides which burner and oven parts can still be found.

A simmer flame that never goes out

On the RDS stoves the small simmer flame burns whenever the burner is on, and it relights by itself if a draft or a boil-over puts it out. A simmer flame that stays out points to the igniter or the burner ports.

No burner without its cap

DCS says the burner should never run without its cap in place. After cleaning, a missing or misplaced cap is one of the first things we check when the flame looks wrong.

Burners by hand in a blackout

The DCS manual says the oven and broiler cannot be turned on during a power failure, but it gives a way to light the top burners by hand. Owners who lose power often can still boil water on these stoves.

Grates that keep cooking

DCS notes that its heavy cast-iron grates stay hot after the flame is off, so food on them can go on cooking. That leftover heat is normal and is not a valve that failed to close.

Parts

Parts for discontinued DCS stoves can take time to track down. Igniters and burner parts are the easiest to find; oven controls may need to be ordered after the first visit.

Repair or replace

An old DCS stove with sound burners and a working oven is usually worth keeping, since igniters, caps and thermostats are routine parts. Replacement becomes the honest answer when a needed oven or valve part is no longer made.

Questions about
DCS stoves.

Does DCS still sell indoor stoves?
Not in the US. The DCS site now lists outdoor grills, refrigeration, heaters and storage only, but an existing DCS stove can still be repaired while parts are available.
Can I cook on my DCS stove when the power is out?
The DCS manual says the oven and broiler cannot be used during a power failure, but it describes lighting the top burners by hand. Follow the steps in your manual, and if you smell gas, stop and leave the house.
Why does my DCS burner have a small flame even on high?
That is the simmer flame, which DCS designed to stay lit whenever the burner is on. It should relight by itself if it blows out.
A burner on my DCS stove will not light. Where do I start?
Listen for the igniter clicking. If it is not clicking, DCS says to turn the burner off; then check that the cap is seated and the ports are clean before booking a visit.
