What Suffolk County does
to a stove.
Where stoves sit in Suffolk County: seasonal houses, on the water, holiday cooking.
All of New York MetroSeasonal houses
Where the house is let as a vacation rental, a stove problem is usually reported by a guest halfway through a stay, and the property manager books the visit for the gap between one check-out and the next arrival.
On the water
Sea air leaves a fine salt film on stove knobs, grates and the metal around the oven door, and on a stove near the beach that film is what turns a hinge stiff or a knob gritty within a few years.
Holiday cooking
Oversized pots on a crowded stovetop overhang the knobs, and the heat rolling off them can soften plastic knobs and wear their stems, so a knob that slips on its shaft after a party is a common and simple replacement.

Huntington
The Town of Huntington began in 1653 with the First Purchase, land between Cold Spring Harbor and Northport Harbor running south from Long Island Sound to what is now Old Country Road.
Lloyd Harbor
Lloyd Harbor voted to incorporate as a village on August 16, 1926, in part to set up its own police department at a time when rum-runners were using the harbor.
Northport
Northport incorporated as a village in 1894, and when its oldest house came up for sale in 2009 the village answered by passing a historic preservation law.
Port Jefferson
Port Jefferson's downtown was a settlement of just five homes through the 18th century, well before shipbuilding and later tourism shaped the village.
Smithtown
Two hamlets straddle the Town of Smithtown's borders, with Commack shared with the Town of Huntington and Hauppauge with the Town of Islip.
Stony Brook
In the later 18th century Stony Brook's new houses went up north of the mill toward the harbor, and a number of those residences still stand.
