What Queens does
to a stove.

Where stoves sit in Queens: mixed housing, family houses, small kitchens.

All of New York Metro

Mixed housing

Mixed neighborhoods set rentals beside owner-occupied houses, so a stove repair may be booked by a landlord for a tenant one day and by an owner who has cooked on the same stove for decades the next.

Family houses

In a family house the stove is where children first learn to cook, so a knob that turns on with a light touch, or an oven door that gets too hot to hold, is worth a visit, and knob covers and the oven lock are shown to the parents.

Small kitchens

In a tight kitchen the gap beside the stove collects crumbs, grease and the odd dropped spoon, so when the stove must be pulled for a repair it is pulled once, gets cleaned behind and goes back square to the counter.

Forest Hills

Co-op apartments along Queens Boulevard with gas stoves that came with the unit, and Tudor houses in the Gardens whose owners would rather keep a stove running than redo the kitchen.

Astoria

Astoria and several neighboring villages were folded into Long Island City in 1870, which in turn became part of Greater New York in 1898.

Bayside

Bayside was mostly farmland through the 19th century, and in the 1920s and 1930s, when movie studios operated in nearby Astoria, many film stars made their homes there.

Douglaston

In 1835 George Douglas bought 240 acres in what is now Douglaston along with the Van Zandt mansion, which today houses the private Douglaston Club.

Fresh Meadows

In the 19th century a farming community called Black Stump grew up in what is now Fresh Meadows, along the old Fresh Meadows Road that ran from the Whitestone landing to Jamaica.

Kew Gardens

Kew Gardens' first apartment building, the Kew Bolmer on Kew Gardens Road, went up in 1915, followed by a clubhouse in 1916 and the Kew-Forest School in 1918.

Long Island City

By the end of the 1930s Long Island City was tied to Manhattan by three subway tunnels, the Queens-Midtown Tunnel and the Queensboro Bridge, decades before its waterfront was rezoned for housing.

Whitestone

Much of Whitestone was once the estate of Francis Lewis, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, whose house was burned to the ground in a British raid during the Revolutionary War.
