What New York Metro does
to a stove.

Where stoves sit in Staten Island, as across New York Metro: tower living, small kitchens, older housing stock.

All of New York Metro

Tower living

Moving in or out of a tower is when a stove gets slid forward for cleaning, and one pushed back without its anti-tip bracket engaged is corrected before the technician leaves, since a child leaning on the open oven door can tip it.

Small kitchens

A small kitchen leaves little room to swing the oven door, so the oven door gets bumped by hips and chairs every day, and its hinges tend to wear out sooner than in a roomy kitchen.

Older housing stock

Buyers of an older house often inherit the stove that came with it and ask one thing first: is it worth keeping? A visit answers by lighting every burner, heating the oven and looking at the gas connector before any money goes to a new stove.

Annadale

Annadale took its name around 1860 from Anna Seguine, a descendant of the French Huguenots who were among the South Shore's earliest settlers.

Great Kills

The 17th-century Poillon-Seguine-Britton House near Great Kills Harbor was listed on the National Register in 1984, but it burned in 1989 and was demolished in 1996.

Huguenot

The Huguenot station on the Staten Island Railway opened in 1860, when the line was extended to Tottenville, and it was called Huguenot Park until the word Park was dropped by 1971.

Todt Hill

Staten Island Academy, a private school, moved its campus to Todt Hill in the 1960s, and the hill's highest point is near the corner of Todt Hill Road and Merrick Avenue.
