What Nassau County does
to a stove.
Where stoves sit in Nassau County: mixed housing, specified kitchens, on the water.
All of New York MetroMixed housing
Older houses on these streets may still feed a gas stove through rigid pipe rather than a flexible connector, which makes pulling it out harder, so the move is planned with the gas off and the connection brought up to current practice.
Specified kitchens
Classic European stoves with cast-iron hotplates or a French top are kept for decades in these kitchens, and their owners want them repaired rather than replaced, which means parts ordered from the maker by the stove's serial number.
On the water
Owners who evacuate or close up for storm season often shut the stove's gas at its valve, and after reopening it a burner may need a few clicks to clear air from the line; one that clicks and never lights deserves a visit, not more tries.

Great Neck
Of the Great Neck villages, Great Neck Estates, Kings Point, Kensington and Lake Success keep their own police departments, while the rest of the peninsula relies on Nassau County's Sixth Precinct.
Garden City
Garden City was first reached by Alexander Turney Stewart's own Central Railroad of Long Island, and the village did not incorporate or fix its boundaries until 1919.
Jericho
Jericho's Friends Meeting House, built in 1788 by the hamlet's Quaker community, is still in use, and the settlement traded its earlier name, Lusum, for Jericho in 1692.
Manhasset
Manhasset Bay was once called Schout's Bay and later Cow Bay, and the Cow Neck name comes from early settlers who could graze one cow on the neck for each section of fence they built.
Massapequa
Massapequa's Long Island Rail Road station, built in 1896 by the Floyd-Jones family, later served as a sales office for developers marketing lots to would-be homeowners.
Oceanside
Oceanside was built over swampland from the early 1900s through the late 1970s, which left the hamlet more exposed to flooding.
Port Washington
A 1912 referendum to incorporate Port Washington as a village failed by nine votes, and it remains an unincorporated hamlet in the Town of North Hempstead.
Rockville Centre
Rockville Centre took its name in 1849 from Mordecai Rock Smith, a local Methodist preacher, and in the early 1940s the village grew by 87 acres when it annexed the Mercy Medical Center grounds.
Roslyn
Roslyn was called Hempstead Harbor until 1844, when it took its present name to end postal mix-ups with the many other Hempsteads on Long Island.
Sands Point
In 1917 Daniel Guggenheim bought the 216-acre Hempstead House estate, formerly Castle Gould, in Sands Point, and his son Harry built his own estate, Falaise, nearby in 1923.
Syosset
Syosset is bordered by Oyster Bay and Laurel Hollow to the north, Woodbury to the east, Plainview and Hicksville to the south, and Jericho and Muttontown to the west.
