An electric stove is the kind many apartments and older homes have: coil burners that sit in chrome or black drip pans, or a flat glass top with circles that glow red, and an oven below heated by one element on its floor and another along its ceiling. Electric stove repair starts from what you see at the burners, because the part that failed decides the whole job: a coil that will not warm might be the coil, its socket, the switch behind its knob or a loose wire. Everything runs from a thick cord and a big outlet behind the stove, fed by a double breaker in the panel, and a stove that goes dead at once often has nothing wrong inside at all. Coils, sockets and switches are among the least costly repairs on any stove. What fails on an electric stove How to tell 01 There is no flame and no ticking: the burners warm up slowly and glow orange or red when they are on high. 02 Either round metal coils plug into sockets on the top, or the whole top is a sheet of black glass printed with circles. 03 The plug behind the stove is much larger than a lamp plug, with three or four heavy prongs, and there is no gas valve on the wall. 04 The breaker panel has a wide double breaker marked for the stove, often at the top or bottom of the panel. On an electric stove: a coil or its socket, the switch behind a knob, an element under the glass, the oven elements. The problems it shows ### A coil or its socket A coil that has blistered or split stops heating, and a socket whose metal clips have burned loses contact, so the coil flickers or works only when you wiggle it. ### The switch behind a knob The switch clicks power on and off to hold the setting you chose. When its contacts weld, one burner runs on high no matter where the knob points; when they burn open, it never warms. ### An element under the glass On a smooth-top stove, one circle staying dark while the others glow is usually a failed element or its heat limiter, reached by lifting the glass top. ### The oven elements The bake element on the oven floor can fail with a bright flash and a burned spot, leaving the broiler at the top as the only heat, so food browns on top and stays raw below. ## Getting at it, and whether to. A coil and its drip pan lift straight out, so a failed coil can be checked by swapping it with a working one of the same size before any visit. Sockets, switches and the wiring are reached by raising the stovetop on its hinges or taking off the back panel, with the breaker off first. 2. A glass top is unclipped and lifted carefully so the elements underneath can be tested and changed. 3. Pulling the stove forward to reach the cord and outlet means the storage drawer comes out and the anti-tip bracket is released first. Repair or replace Most electric stove problems are coils, sockets, switches and oven elements, and those are worth fixing on nearly any stove that is otherwise sound. The decision gets harder when a cracked glass top meets an older stove, because the glass is the costliest part on it, or when a control board with a display is no longer sold for that model. Can I test it myself? Yes, safely, with the stove off and the coils cool: lift the dead coil out and plug it into a working socket of the same size. If it heats there, the coil is fine and the socket, switch or wiring is the problem. If it stays cold in any socket, a new coil usually solves it. ### Why did my electric stove stop working all at once, top and oven? When everything goes dark together, look at the breaker panel first. A double breaker can trip on one side only, so the clock may still light while nothing heats. If the breaker trips again as soon as you reset it, leave it off and book a visit. ### My landlord asked me to report a burner that only works on high. How serious is that? It is worth treating as urgent. A switch stuck on high means you cannot turn that burner down or off with its knob. Do not use it, and switch the stove off at the breaker if the burner stays hot with the knob off. Let the owner know which burner it is and what it does. ### Is it normal for new coil burners to smoke the first time? A short burst of light smoke and a smell the first time a new coil or drip pan heats is the factory coating burning off. Run it on high for a few minutes with a fan on.
