Stove igniter repair covers the parts that make the ticking sound: the small white ceramic electrode next to each burner, the switch on each knob's valve stem that tells the stove to spark, and the module that makes the spark for all of them. When a burner ticks but never catches, the electrode is often wet, dirty, cracked or too far from the burner. When the ticking will not stop, a spark switch is usually stuck, most often after a spill ran down behind a knob. Should I call right away? Let it dry out before booking. Water that ran behind a knob can hold a spark switch closed, and the ticking often stops once it dries. Unplug the stove or switch off its breaker, leave it for a few hours, and try again. If it still ticks with every knob off, book a visit. ### Is the constant ticking bad for the stove? It wears the spark module over time and it is annoying, but it is not a gas leak on its own. Unplugging the stove stops it; just remember the oven and clock go off too, and gas burners can then be lit by hand. ### Only one burner will not light but the others do. Is it the igniter? Often it is that burner's electrode, cap or holes rather than the igniter system as a whole, since one module sparks all the burners. If you hear the tick at that burner but see no flame, check that the cap sits flat and the tip is dry. ### Can children set off the igniter by turning a knob? Yes, on most gas stoves a knob pushed in and turned sparks and releases gas.
