Without gas, shut the stove's breaker off Any shock from a stove is an emergency, even a mild one. Switch off its breaker if the panel can be reached safely away from the stove, otherwise leave the kitchen, and do not use the stove until the grounding and wiring have been checked. ## What it usually means. The metal body of a stove is supposed to be connected to ground, so that if a live wire ever touches it the current runs away through that path and trips the breaker instead of through you. A shock means two things are wrong at once: something live is touching the metal, and the ground path is missing or broken. Older installations often connect a stove with three wires and a strap that joins neutral to the frame; if that strap or the neutral wire has come loose, the whole stove can carry a charge. A split heating element, a wire rubbing through its insulation after a move, or water that reached the wiring can supply the live side. A slight tingle is just as serious as a jolt; it only means the path through you was a poor one that time. A single snap on a dry winter day after walking across carpet can be static, and it happens with any metal object. A tingle that repeats, that you feel while cooking, or that comes when you touch the stove and the sink together is not static; switch off the breaker if you can do it safely. ### Does a gas stove shock anyone? It can. A gas stove still plugs into an outlet for its igniters, lights and clock, and a missing ground or a damaged cord can let that current reach the frame. ### The shocks started after we moved the stove. Why? Moving a stove can pull a wire loose at the connection, pinch the cord against the wall, or leave out the ground wire when it was reconnected. It needs checking before it is used. ### My landlord says the stove is fine. What should I do? Keep the breaker off, write down when and where the shocks happened, and ask for the stove to be tested in writing.
