A stove error code tells you which check the controls could not pass. On a stove those checks cover the oven heat and its sensor, the door lock used for self-clean, gas ignition on stoves with electronic controls, the burners or zones on a glass or induction top, the keys and display, and the board itself. Some codes are not errors at all: a lock symbol, a showroom mode or a prompt that the oven is still hot. Codes differ from maker to maker, and even between models of the same make, so a code only means something alongside the model number of your stove. Write down exactly what it shows before resetting anything. The 8 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 What exactly does the display show, and could a letter be a number, such as an O for a 0? 02 Does the code come back after the breaker has been off for five minutes? 03 Does it stop only the oven, one burner, or the whole stove? 04 When does it appear: at power-up, during preheat, during self-clean or while a burner is on? 05 Can you find the model number, usually on a plate behind the oven drawer or around the door frame? ## Check these before you book. Stove error code: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Write the code down exactly as shown, or take a photo of the display. 02 If the code comes with heat that will not switch off, smoke or a burning smell, turn off the breaker if you can reach it away from the stove; with any gas smell, leave and call the gas utility from outside. 03 Find your stove's model number, usually on a plate behind the oven drawer or inside the door frame. ### Also worth checking - Switch the breaker off for five minutes, switch it back on and see whether the code returns. - Look up the code in the manual for your exact model, because some codes are prompts rather than failures. ### How soon does it need a visit? Most stove codes can wait for a visit. Treat the code as urgent if it warns of overheating, the oven or a burner keeps heating, or smoke or a burning smell comes with it; switch off the breaker if you can safely. If you smell gas at all, get out and phone the gas utility once you are outdoors. Should I still book a visit? Maybe not. A brief power problem can leave a code that a reset clears. If the same code comes back, the part it points to is likely failing. ### Why do the codes I found online not match my stove? Lists online often mix makes, models and types of appliance. Only the manual for your model number can be trusted. ### Does an old stove with knobs have error codes? Most older stoves with dials have no display and no codes. Newer stoves with a clock and touch keys usually do, mainly for the oven. ### Can I clear a code and keep cooking? If the code clears and the stove works normally, yes.
