Row houses where an older gas stove often came with the house, and anything bigger than a part has to climb narrow stairs, so repair tends to win over replacement. ## What Brooklyn Heights does to a stove. Building the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in the 1940s and 1950s took the neighborhood's northwest corner and destroyed whole rows of brownstones. Most of the neighborhood's brownstone is Jersey freestone, a reddish-brown stone from Passaic County, New Jersey, though some houses were built of brick. In the mid-1950s new owners began the Brownstone Revival here, buying and restoring pre-Civil War houses in a movement that led to the city's Landmarks Preservation Law of 1965. The historic district is bounded by Cadman Plaza West on the north, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway on the west and Atlantic Avenue on the south. A visit answers by lighting every burner, heating the oven and looking at the gas connector before any money goes to a new stove. ### Small kitchens A small kitchen leaves little room to swing the oven door, so the oven door gets bumped by hips and chairs every day, and its hinges tend to wear out sooner than in a roomy kitchen. ### Mixed housing Older houses on these streets may still feed a gas stove through rigid pipe rather than a flexible connector, which makes pulling it out harder, so the move is planned with the gas off and the connection brought up to current practice. ## A visit in Brooklyn Heights.
