Choosing and comparing

# Gas or electric stove in a remodel: settle it before the walls close

Choosing a gas or electric stove in a remodel starts with what the kitchen already has behind the wall and what the electrical panel can carry. Gas needs a supply line, a small outlet and good exhaust to the outdoors. Both electric kinds draw from a heavy 240-volt line, and induction adds one more condition: pans a magnet will cling to. Settle it before cabinets are ordered.

## At a glance.

A remodel is the one time the choice of fuel is cheap to change, because the floor, the wall and the cabinets are open anyway. Deciding between a gas or electric stove before the drywall goes back saves running a line or a circuit through a finished kitchen later.

Read the whole guide

### Gas stove needs A gas supply with a shutoff behind the stove and a standard outlet for ignition and lights

That small plug runs the igniters, the clock and the oven's electronics.

### Electric or induction stove needs A dedicated 240-volt circuit and receptacle sized to the model

Check the installation instructions of the exact stove before the electrician wires it.

### Easy to forget Exhaust ducted to the outdoors

EPA advises an exhaust fan vented outside over a gas stove.

### Worth asking about State HEEHR rebates for electric appliances and panel upgrades

Offered where a state has launched the federal program.

## Start with what the kitchen already has

Open the wall or pull the old stove forward (with the gas shut off by an installer, or the breaker off) and note what is there. The supply you already have is the cheapest one to keep, and the stove you choose should be judged partly by how much of the house it asks you to change.

### A gas stub and an ordinary outlet

This kitchen is ready for a gas stove as it stands. Staying with gas means only confirming that the shutoff valve is reachable behind the new stove and that the outlet sits where the new model's cord will reach it without stretching.

### A heavy 240-volt receptacle

A large round or rectangular receptacle low on the wall means the kitchen was wired for electric cooking. An induction stove may still need a larger breaker than the smooth-top it replaces, so read its rating plate requirement before assuming the circuit will do.

### Both supplies, or neither

Some kitchens have both, left over from an earlier swap, which keeps every option open. A kitchen moving the stove to a new wall or an island has neither in the new spot, and then the difference in cost between the fuels comes down to the length of the run from the meter or from the panel.

## The electrical panel can decide it for you

An electric or induction stove is one of the heaviest loads in a house. In an older home already running central air, an electric water heater and a dryer, the panel may not have the spare capacity or the space for another large breaker. An electrician can calculate the load before anything is bought; a panel upgrade can turn a simple swap into the biggest line on the remodel budget.

The federal Home Energy Rebates programs include HEEHR, which states run and which covers efficient electric appliances as well as electric wiring and load service center upgrades. Availability and eligibility differ by state, so ask your state energy office early, while the plan can still change.

## Living with each one day to day

The table compares what owners notice after a few months, not what the brochure lists. Coil and smooth glass stoves are both electric resistance; induction heats the pan itself through a magnetic field.

- A gas stove adds combustion to the kitchen air, which is why the exhaust plan belongs in the same conversation.
- An electric stove adds no combustion, but a smooth glass top stays hot for a while after the element is off.
- An induction stove keeps the glass cooler around the pan, which suits a household with small children.

| What you notice | Gas | Coil electric | Smooth glass electric | Induction |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Response when you turn the knob down | Immediate | Slow | Slow | Immediate |
| Cleaning the top | Grates and caps to lift | Drip bowls to wash | One flat surface | One flat surface, spills burn less |
| Pans that work | Any | Any flat pan | Flat-bottomed pans | Magnetic, flat-bottomed pans |
| What most often needs repair | Igniters and spark switches | Elements and sockets | Elements, limiters and glass | Boards and cooling fans |

## Plan the exhaust together with the fuel

The EPA lists gas stoves among the indoor sources of nitrogen dioxide and advises installing and using an exhaust fan vented to the outdoors over them. In a remodel that is the moment to run a duct through an outside wall or the roof, instead of settling for a fan that only recirculates through a filter.

Electric and induction stoves still produce steam, smoke and grease from the food itself, so the exhaust matters for them too; it simply stops being tied to the fuel. Size the fan and the duct for the way you cook, not for the stove's badge.

- Duct the fan to the outdoors through a wall or the roof rather than recirculating.
- Choose a fan wide enough to cover the front burners, which most cooks use most.
- Plan a switch within reach of the stove, so the fan actually gets turned on.
- Leave room for makeup air if the house is tightly sealed and the fan is large.

## Pans, habits and everyone else who cooks

Induction is the choice most likely to change the cupboard. Whirlpool's help page gives the simplest test: if a magnet sticks firmly to the bottom of a pan, the pan will work on induction. Cast iron and most enameled steel pass; aluminum, copper and glass do not, unless they have a magnetic base.

Think too about who else uses the stove. A cook who chars peppers over a flame or uses a round-bottomed wok will miss gas. A household that wants the easiest top to clean, or a family member who forgets a burner, may be better served by electric or induction with its automatic shutoff features.

## Where to stop

Leave gas lines, shutoff valves and capping an unused gas stub to a qualified installer, and never test a gas connection with a flame. New circuits, receptacles and panel work belong to an electrician with the permit your town requires. Should the kitchen ever smell of gas while the work is underway, clear the house first and phone the utility once everyone is outdoors.

## Step by step.

Four steps, in the order worth doing them.

01

### Record what is behind the stove

Photograph the gas shutoff, the outlet or receptacle and the wall around them before demolition starts.

02

### Ask for a load calculation

Have the electrician confirm the panel can carry an electric or induction stove before you decide.

03

### Pick the model before the cabinets

Its installation instructions set the gas inlet or cord position, the cutout width and the side clearances.

04

### Plan the duct with the fuel

Route the exhaust to the outdoors while the ceiling and wall are open.

For the heart of your home.

## Questions owners ask.

### Can I switch from gas to electric without opening walls?

Sometimes, if the panel has room and the cable can reach the stove from a basement or crawlspace below. Whatever route the cable takes, the old gas stub needs a proper cap fitted by a qualified installer.

### Does an induction stove need special wiring compared with a smooth-top?

Often the same 240-volt type of circuit, but sometimes a larger breaker. The installation instructions of the model you choose state what it needs.

### Will my old pans work on a new electric stove?

On coil and smooth glass, any flat-bottomed pan works. On induction, only pans a magnet sticks to.

### Is it smart to keep the gas line after switching?

Keeping it capped behind the wall costs little and leaves the next owner a choice, as long as it is capped and tested properly.

## When it needs a technician.

The repairs on the right are where this guide ends when the checks do not settle it.

### Gas and power hookup check

A check of what connects your stove to the house, the gas valve and connector or the cord and outlet, plus the anti-tip bracket, when a stove is moved, replaced or has sat unused.

### Diagnostic visit

A visit that cooks on your stove the way you do, burners on top and the oven below, and finds the part that failed before anything is ordered.

### Igniter and spark switch repair

Gas stove burners that tick without lighting, keep ticking after they light or tick with every knob off, traced to the electrode, the spark switch or the spark module.

Deciding what stove to keep or buy

### Is it worth fixing an old stove, or time to buy a new one?

Which part failed matters more than the stove's age: igniters, elements and knob switches are worth replacing, while a retired control board, rusted oven floor or open recall points to a new stove.
