Why the stove is doing that

# Common problems guides.

What your stove is telling you when it goes completely dead, a burner sticks on high after the knob is off, or the clicking carries on long after the flame has caught.

## Common problems, guide by guide.

Start here when the stove is doing something it did not do last week: a panel that stays dark, a burner that refuses to turn down, a steady ticking from the knobs. Each guide in this section begins with what you can see and hear standing in front of the stove, and works back to the handful of causes that explain it, most likely first.

### [Why my stove won't turn on: dark panel, cold burners or a silent oven](https://stoverepair.center/guides/why-my-stove-wont-turn-on/)

Sorting a dead stove by what still lights, then the two-pole breaker, the plug behind the drawer, and the lock, Sabbath and demo settings that make a working stove look dead.

### [Why a stove burner stays on high, and how to stop it first](https://stoverepair.center/guides/why-a-stove-burner-stays-on-high/)

Cutting the heat in the first minute, telling normal cycling and slow-cooling glass from a welded switch, a stuck relay or a slipped gas knob, and what to note before power goes back on.

### [Why the stove keeps clicking with the knobs off, lit or baking](https://stoverepair.center/guides/why-the-stove-keeps-clicking/)

One spark module firing every igniter, a knob a hair past off, a spill in a switch, ticking beside a steady flame, and the oven sounds that are normal against the ones that need a technician.

## Why the stove is doing that.

The guides cover gas, electric coil, smooth glass and induction stoves side by side, because the same complaint has different roots on each. A clock that runs while nothing heats means one thing on an electric stove and something else on a gas one, and a clicking sound can be perfectly normal or a switch asking for attention.

Some of these problems are urgent. A burner stuck at full heat, a flame that will not go out or any smell of gas is covered in the first lines of the relevant guide, before any explanation, so the safe move is always the first thing you read.

### The short answer Why my stove won't turn on: dark panel, cold burners or a silent oven

When a stove won't turn on, first note what still works: a dark panel points to the breaker or the plug, a lit clock with cold burners points to half a breaker or a wiring issue, and a panel that answers but will not heat often has a lock, Sabbath or demo setting active before any part has failed.

### The short answer Why a stove burner stays on high, and how to stop it first

When a stove burner stays on high whatever the knob says, cut the heat first: on an electric stove switch off both handles of its breaker, on a gas stove turn the knob off and call the gas utility if the flame keeps burning.

### The short answer Why the stove keeps clicking with the knobs off, lit or baking

When a stove keeps clicking, the timing tells the story: ticking with every knob off usually means a knob not fully off or water in a switch after cleaning, ticking beside a steady flame after the knob is turned to a setting needs service, and soft clicks or a small poof from a gas oven as it cycles are normal.

## When reading is not enough.

If the checks in these guides did not settle it, the visit picks up from there, stop by stop.

[What repairs cost](https://stoverepair.center/cost/)

1. 01 The stove, tried the way you use it
2. 02 A number before the work
3. 03 Common stove parts already on board
4. 04 Put back, then cooked on

## Questions about common problems.

### How do I tell a stove problem that can wait from one that cannot?

Heat you cannot switch off, a gas smell, sparks or smoke from the controls and a stove that gives a shock cannot wait. A burner that will not light, a dark display or an oven that will not start can usually wait for a booked visit.

### Are these guides written for one brand of stove?

No. They follow what the stove is doing and which kind it is, and use makers' published help pages only where a specific fact needs backing.

### What should I have ready before reading one of these guides?

Access to the breaker panel, a flashlight and the stove's model number if you can find it. Most of the checks need nothing more.

## The other sections.

Split by what you are trying to find out rather than by which part of the appliance it concerns.
