Read first, book second

# Stove guides, read first.

A stove repair guide is only useful if it answers the question you actually have, so these are split by what you are trying to find out — is this worth paying for, what is that noise, what can I check myself — rather than by which part of the appliance it concerns.

## Work out what you are dealing with.

Split by what you are trying to find out rather than by what part of the appliance it concerns.

Reading did not fix it?

### The work itself

Every guide here ends in the same place: what a technician actually does about it, in the order it gets done.

10 kinds of work Cheapest cause first What a visit costs

See what we do

Want to know what a stove repair will run you? That gets a page of its own instead of a line here, because nobody can fairly name a number before the stove has been pulled from the wall and opened — [stove repair cost](https://stoverepair.center/cost/).

## Not sure where to start?

Most stove calls start with the same few worries. Each one is getting a guide written for the owner standing in front of the stove, and several of them end with something you can put right yourself at no cost.

[Or start from the symptom](https://stoverepair.center/problems/)

### The stove is dead and nothing on it responds Why my stove won't turn on: dark panel, cold burners or a silent oven

Sorting a dead stove by what still lights, then the two-pole breaker, the plug behind the drawer, and the lock, Sabbath and demo settings that make a working stove look dead.

### The power came back and the stove did not Stove checks after a power outage, from the dark to the reset

Knobs off and no heating the house while it is dark, lighting gas burners by match, setting the clock, spotting surge damage and partial power, and the two-hour line for food.

### Before a pan ever catches fire on the stovetop Putting Out a Grease Fire on the Stove: Lid On, Heat Off, No Water

How oil in a skillet catches, sliding a lid across it, why water and a walk to the sink spread the fire, flames in the oven and what to check before the next meal.

### You are weighing a repair against a new stove Is it worth fixing an old stove, or time to buy a new one?

Which part failed matters more than the stove's age: igniters, elements and knob switches are worth replacing, while a retired control board, rusted oven floor or open recall points to a new stove.

## When reading is not enough.

If the checks in a guide did not settle it, a technician picks up from there. The visit, stop by stop.

[What repairs cost](https://stoverepair.center/cost/)

1. 01 The stove, tried the way you use it
2. 02 A number before the work
3. 03 Common stove parts already on board
4. 04 Put back, then cooked on

## When there is no time to read.

These five can put gas into the air of the house, start a fire on the stovetop, or leave a burner blazing that its own knob no longer shuts down. Each page puts the causes in the order worth checking, and says when to stop and book.

## Questions about the guides.

### Can a stove guide stand in for a technician?

No. The guides explain what goes on under the burners and behind the oven door and which checks are safe for an owner, so the easy causes get ruled out and the rest can be described clearly when you book. Whenever a guide comes near the gas line, live wiring or the boards inside, it tells you to stop.

### Are the stove guides written for one brand?

Most are written for a kind of stove rather than a single maker, because gas burners, coil sockets and oven elements behave much alike from brand to brand. Where a maker does things differently the guide says so, and the owner's manual for your stove always outranks anything here.

### Which stove guide should I read first?

If the stove is misbehaving right now, the problem pages are faster, sorted by what you notice. The guides are longer and suit a question you can sit down with: why a burner quit after a cleaning, what to do before a pan ever catches fire, or whether an old stove deserves one more repair.

### Where does the information in the stove guides come from?

Specific claims point to their source: the maker's owner's or installation manual, or fire, gas and child-safety advice from a public agency. Where no source is named, the point is offered as what our technicians see on stoves, never as a rule.
